Underground Christmas Markets: Caves, Cellars and a Museum Labyrinth

Christmas markets in caves, cellars and tunnels stay dry whatever the weather. Here are the ones we could verify for 2026, from Valkenburg’s marl caves to San Candido in the Dolomites.

An underground Christmas market solves the two big problems of the season: cold and rain. Below ground the air stays still, the stalls glow against rock or old brick, and nobody has to shelter under a chalet roof. They are rarer than you might think, and several run only for a few days, so we have kept this list to the ones whose organisers we could check.

All of them are confirmed for 2026: Valkenburg’s twin cave markets in the Netherlands, the labyrinth market at San Candido in the Dolomites and the Moselle wine-cellar market at Traben-Trarbach.

The Netherlands

1. Gemeentegrot, Valkenburg

The Gemeentegrot is the market that made Valkenburg’s name. It sits in an old marl quarry at Cauberg 4, on the edge of the town centre, and the town bills it as Europe’s largest underground Christmas market. Gift and decoration stands line the passages, with dressed scenes and food and drink along the way. It runs from 13 November to 30 December 2026, from 11am to 7pm on weekdays and 10am to 7pm at weekends, and closes on Christmas Day. The cave is wheelchair accessible.

Best for: A first underground market, with space to linger.

2. Fluweelengrot, Valkenburg

The Fluweelengrot, or Velvet Cave, winds through soft marl below the ruin of Valkenburg Castle. It is decorated as a North Pole world, with market stalls, an underground food square and old charcoal drawings on the walls. Dates and hours match the Gemeentegrot, with shorter hours on 24 and 30 December. Both caves use timed tickets with 15- or 30-minute slots, booked online in advance, and the organisers suggest leaving about 1.5 hours between two cave visits.

Best for: Families who want a themed walk as well as shopping.

Valkenburg adds more under the hills: Kerst in MergelRijk and the Winter Wonderland, with its underground nativity scene, run from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, each with separate tickets. Our Valkenburg Christmas market 2026 guide covers the lot, including the parade dates.

Tip: Book a morning slot on a weekday. The organisers say weekends are often very busy, and weekend slots often sell out.

Italy

3. Dolomythos, San Candido

At San Candido, known in German as Innichen, in the Dolomites near the Austrian border, the Dolomythos museum turns its winding cave passages into an underground Christmas market. Stalls sell local crafts and better-quality Christmas goods, and warm rooms serve mulled wine, homemade punch and South Tyrolean specialities. The route passes the museum’s dinosaur exhibits and what it calls the largest gold find in the Alps. The market runs daily from 13 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, from 8am to 7pm, and is closed on 25 December. Entry is free, and so is the museum during the market.

San Candido has its own Dolomites Christmas market above ground too, so a day here gives you both. It’s also a short trip from the South Tyrolean markets; see our Trento and Bolzano Christmas markets guide.

Best for: Combining a market with a snowy Dolomites break, all the way to Twelfth Night.

Germany

4. Mosel-Wein-Nachts-Markt, Traben-Trarbach

Traben-Trarbach, a wine town on the Moselle, holds its Christmas market in the cellars beneath the town, some dating from the 16th century. Deutsche Bahn’s regional travel pages describe them as lit for the occasion, with music and entertainment outside. In 2025/26 the market used cellars including those of the Hotel Moselschlösschen, the Old Town Hall, the Axel Emert winery and the Villa Nollen, with a Christmas tree exhibition in the Bridge Cellar.

The 2026/27 market runs from 20 November 2026 to 2 January 2027, on weekends and special opening days, according to the town of Traben-Trarbach. Check the day-by-day calendar on the town’s site before you book. Traben-Trarbach has a railway station on a regional branch line, and the cellars are in the town centre.

Best for: Moselle Riesling, mulled or straight, under stone vaults.

For more on the grape, see our Riesling guide.

How to choose

  • For the full experience: Valkenburg. Two caves, a light parade and Maastricht a short train ride away.
  • For a long season: San Candido, which runs to 6 January 2027 and opens from 8am.
  • For wine lovers: Traben-Trarbach, on a weekend between 20 November and 2 January.
  • From Luxembourg or Belgium: Valkenburg and Traben-Trarbach are both within easy reach. Our Christmas markets near Luxembourg guide has the train routes.

Underground doesn’t mean warm. Caves and cellars stay cool all year, so keep your coat on and wear shoes with grip, as floors can be uneven or damp.
