Valkenburg holds its Christmas market underground. Two marl caves below this small Limburg town fill with stalls, lights and food from mid-November, while a parade of illuminated floats rolls through the streets above. It suits families, couples and anyone who has done the big town-square markets and wants something different, and it makes an easy day out from Maastricht by train.
Why go
Valkenburg calls itself Kerststad, the Christmas town, and from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 the whole centre is dressed for it. The heart of it is the two cave markets. The Gemeentegrot and the Fluweelengrot are old marl quarries, cut into the soft yellow stone of the hills, and their passages stay sheltered from wind and rain. Walking between stalls under a stone ceiling is nothing like shuffling across a cold square.
Around the caves the town adds a light parade, an underground nativity scene, a curling rink and other Christmas attractions. The organisers say Valkenburg was named best Christmas parade in Europe and best Christmas market in the Netherlands in 2025.

Tickets and timed entry
Both caves work on timed tickets. You choose a date and a time slot, of 15 or 30 minutes, and the official FAQ says tickets are sold online in advance through the Kerststad ticket shop. Arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before your slot. A visit to each cave takes about an hour to an hour and a half, so leave around 1.5 hours between your two bookings. You can change your date or time once, using the link in your confirmation email.
Weekends often sell out, especially at the cave markets. The box office may still sell tickets on the day, but booking online is the only way to be sure. Dogs are not allowed in either cave, and not every stallholder takes cards, so carry some cash.
Tip: Book a morning slot on a weekday. The organisers themselves say weekends are often very busy.
