Zagreb Christmas market 2026 dates
Advent in Zagreb 2026 runs from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Thursday 7 January 2027, as listed on the official festival site, adventzagreb.hr. The City of Zagreb’s 2026 vendor tenders give the same dates, with stallholders setting up on 25–27 November ahead of the official opening.
The detailed 2026 programme, map and daily opening hours had not been published by mid-October. Check the official site for each location’s hours before you go.
Where the markets are
The city’s 2026 tenders name the central Advent sites. Here is what each one is, from the main square up to the Upper Town.
Ban Jelačić Square (Trg bana Jelačića)
The main square is the Ban Jelačić Square Christmas hub, with food and drink stalls spilling into the pedestrian streets off it, Gajeva and Bogovićeva. In recent years it has held the city’s big Christmas tree and Advent candles around the Manduševac fountain. It is the natural meeting point and the easiest place to start.
Zrinjevac (Trg Nikole Šubića Zrinskog)
The tree-lined park a few minutes south of the main square has long been the heart of Advent, with lights strung through its plane trees and concerts at the bandstand. It is listed among the 2026 park locations.
Strossmayer Square and Tomislav Square
The green squares continue south towards the station. Strossmayer Square has in recent years hosted Fuliranje, a food-led street party that gets busy in the evenings. King Tomislav Square, in front of the Art Pavilion, has been home to the Ice Park (Ledeni park), an open-air skating rink. Both squares are on the 2026 location list. Upper Town: Strossmayer promenade and Gradec plateau
Up the hill, the Strossmayer promenade (Strossmayerovo šetalište), east and west sections, runs along the old town walls with views over the Lower Town rooftops. The Gradec plateau (Plato Gradec) is a terrace looking across the city, with food, drinks and music. Both are among the most atmospheric spots after dark.
European Square and the neighbourhoods
European Square (Europski trg), just east of the main square, and Kvaternik Square are also on the 2026 list. Districts such as Trešnjevka, Novi Zagreb, Dubrava and Sesvete run their own smaller Advent events, and there is one at the Sljeme cable car.
What’s special
The scale sets Zagreb apart. You can walk from one festive corner to the next for a whole evening, and each site has its own feel: grand squares in the Lower Town, terraces and gas lamps above. The crowd is mostly local, from friends meeting after work to families out at the weekend, and there is plenty of live music. The season is long, too. It runs into January, so you can come after Christmas, when many German markets have already packed up.
Food and drink to try
- Fritule: small, sugar-dusted doughnuts, often flavoured with citrus or rum.
- Kuhano vino: Croatian mulled wine, in red or white.
- Štrukli: a Zagreb speciality of dough filled with cottage cheese, baked or boiled.
- Grilled sausages (kobasice): served in bread with mustard.
- Licitar hearts: red, decorated gingerbread hearts. They are a traditional gift from northern Croatia and appear on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list.
Tip: Eat your way round the stalls rather than booking dinner. The food is the point of Advent in Zagreb.
Two days at Advent
Day 1: Spend the afternoon in the Upper Town. Walk up to St Mark’s Church, with its tiled roof, and the Stone Gate shrine. At dusk, move to the Gradec plateau and Strossmayer promenade for the views. Finish on Ban Jelačić Square.
Day 2: In the morning, browse Dolac, the city’s main produce market just above the main square. In the afternoon, visit a museum, then spend the evening working south through Zrinjevac, Strossmayer Square and Tomislav Square.
Avoiding the crowds
- Friday and Saturday evenings are packed, especially on the Upper Town terraces. Go on weekday evenings or arrive soon after the stalls open.
- The opening weekend and the weekends of mid-December are the busiest.
- The days between Christmas and early January are quieter, and the festival is still running.
- Keep an eye on bags and phones in the densest crowds.
Tip: Go up to the Upper Town before sunset for the view, then follow the crowd down into the Lower Town after dark.
Other Christmas markets in Croatia
Advent has spread well beyond the capital. These towns run festive programmes each winter, but not all had confirmed 2026 dates by mid-October, so check each town’s tourist board.
- Rijeka: rows of Christmas huts line the Korzo, the main pedestrian street, with lights at Trsat Castle above the city.
- Opatija: billed as Advent by the sea, with lights along the seafront and through Angiolina Park, concerts and an ice rink.
- Split: Advent spreads around the old town squares and along the Riva, with a family area in Đardin park.
- Osijek: the main city of Slavonia, in the east, holds its own Advent programme.
- Dubrovnik: the Dubrovnik Winter Festival brings huts, concerts and a New Year’s concert on the Stradun.
Getting there and practical notes
Zagreb Franjo Tuđman Airport lies south-east of the city. The main railway station sits on the southern edge of the Lower Town, a short walk from Tomislav Square and the other Lower Town sites. The centre is compact, and trams cover longer hops.
Winters are cold, often around freezing in the evening, so pack warm layers, gloves and shoes with grip for the Upper Town cobbles. Croatia uses the euro.
