Most German markets pack up on 23 or 24 December, but plenty of Europe keeps the lights on into the new year. The days between Christmas and Twelfth Night are often the calmest of the season: the pre-Christmas shopping crowds have gone, hotels have more room outside New Year’s Eve itself, and you can fold a market into a New Year break. These 26 markets all run into January 2027.
The dates below come from our verified calendar. For every market in Europe, with search and country filters, use the full calendar on European Christmas markets 2026 dates and tick "Open into January".

Croatia
Zagreb

Advent in Zagreb is the last big market standing, running from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. It isn’t one market but a festival spread across the city, from the parks and squares of the Lower Town to the gas-lit promenades of the Upper Town, with fritule and mulled wine at every turn. The crowd is mostly local, which makes the quiet first week of January a good time to go. Our Zagreb Christmas market guide maps the sites.
Best for: A long, sociable season with a local feel.
Czechia
Prague

The Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets both run from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, a ten-minute walk apart. Old Town Square is the showpiece, with chalets below the Týn Church spires and the astronomical clock round the corner; it looks its best after dark. Few major cities give you this much atmosphere in the first week of January. See our Prague Christmas markets 2026 guide for a weekend route.
Best for: A post-New Year city break with the full fairy-tale setting.
Austria
Vienna

The Christmas Market at Schönbrunn Palace opens on 6 November and runs to 6 January 2027, so it covers the whole season. The palace forecourt is calmer than the big Rathausplatz market, which closes on 26 December, with a strong line in crafts and decorations. Pair it with a palace tour and an afternoon at Café Landtmann or Café Sperl. Our Vienna Christmas markets 2026 guide compares the city’s markets.
Best for: Combining a market with palaces, museums and coffee houses.
Salzburg

The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 on the squares around the cathedral, in the heart of the Baroque old town. The fortress on the hill above and the river below make it one of the most handsome market settings in Austria. Its run ends on New Year’s Day, so plan for the last days of December.
Best for: A classic Alpine-city market over the New Year.
Hungary
Budapest

The Advent Feast at St Stephen’s Basilica runs from 13 November 2026 to 1 January 2027, filling the square in front of the church with Hungarian makers, food stands and a daily programme. Hours are shorter on 24 to 26 December, 31 December and 1 January. Add a morning in an outdoor thermal bath and you have the best winter contrast in Europe. Our Budapest Christmas market 2026 guide has the details.
Best for: Markets and steaming thermal baths over New Year.
Estonia
Tallinn

The Tallinn Christmas Market fills Town Hall Square from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, below the Gothic town hall in the medieval Old Town. A tall Christmas tree stands at its centre, and the cobbled lanes and city walls around it suit a cold, clear winter walk. It is one of the few northern markets that lasts to Three Kings’ Day.
Best for: A snowy medieval old town at the far end of the season.
Belgium
Brussels

Winter Wonders runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with stalls spread through the city centre and the Grand-Place a short walk away. Waffles, frites and Belgian beer cover the food. It’s an easy rail trip from London, Paris or Amsterdam. Read our Brussels Christmas market weekend for a 48-hour route.
Best for: An easy Eurostar trip between Christmas and New Year.
Bruges

The Bruges Christmas markets run from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 on the Markt below the Belfry and on the smaller Simon Stevinplein. The wider Winter Glow programme and its light trail continue to 31 January, so the city still has a winter glow after the stalls have gone. Ghent’s Winterfeesten, also open to 3 January, is a short train ride away. Our Bruges Christmas market 2026 guide pairs the two.
Best for: Canals, chocolate and a two-city Belgian trip.
Luxembourg
Luxembourg City

Winterlights runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with chalets, an ice rink and a big wheel spread across the capital’s squares. The old town sits on cliffs above two river valleys and is small enough to cross on foot. It’s a calmer pick than the bigger cities. See our Luxembourg Winterlights guide.
Best for: A compact, relaxed rail weekend.
Denmark
Copenhagen

Christmas in Tivoli runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with the historic gardens hung with lights, a Christmas market, an ice rink and the rides still running. The season ends with fireworks at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Hours change through the season, so check the daily calendar on tivoli.dk. Our Copenhagen Christmas market 2026 guide covers the rest of the city.
Best for: Families, and a New Year’s Eve with fireworks.
United Kingdom
Edinburgh

Edinburgh’s Christmas runs from 14 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with stalls in the valley of East Princes Street Gardens below the castle and a big wheel turning above. Stay for the last days of December and you can add Hogmanay, Scotland’s New Year. Our Edinburgh Christmas market guide has the Hogmanay plan.
Best for: Pairing a market with one of Europe’s great New Year celebrations.
London

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland runs from 19 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, closer to a funfair than a market, with rides, bars and shows. The Southbank Centre Winter Market by the Thames runs a day longer, to 4 January (closed 25 and 31 December). Our London Christmas markets guide covers both, plus booking rules for Winter Wonderland.
Best for: Families and groups who want rides as well as stalls.
Plan it
- New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day: Many markets shorten their hours on 31 December and 1 January, and some close early or open late. Budapest’s Basilica market has short hours on both days. Check the official site before you go.
- Three Kings on 5 and 6 January: In much of central Europe, Twelfth Night and Epiphany are holidays or festival days, which can change hours and transport. If your trip falls on 6 January, the last day for many markets on this list, check the official site.
- The stalls go first: In Vilnius the market ends on 27 December while the tree stays to 6 January. Bruges’ Winter Glow outlasts its markets. Check what is still running before you book.
- Christmas Day: Several markets close on 25 December. If you’re travelling over Christmas itself, check the official listing for each one.
Tip: The quietest days of the season usually fall between 2 January and the closing date. Prague, Vienna’s Schönbrunn, Zagreb and Tallinn all give you those days.
