Stockholm spreads Christmas across its islands: red stalls on the old town’s main square, a historic market among farmhouses at Skansen and a million lights strung through the city centre. Add fika with saffron buns, candles in every window and dark water reflecting it all, and it makes a festive weekend with real character. It suits couples and families who want tradition without the crush of the biggest German markets.
Why go
Stockholm’s markets are small, but the city around them is spectacular in December. The Christmas market on Stortorget, the oldest square in Gamla Stan, is the classic picture: red wooden huts in front of tall, colourful merchants’ houses, a few steps from the Royal Palace. Across the water on Djurgården, the open-air museum Skansen has held its Christmas market since 1903.
Then there are the lights. The #Stockholmsjul display decorates more than 40 streets and squares with one million LED lights, and the NK department store has dressed its windows with Christmas scenes since 1915. Most of the season can be walked in an afternoon.

The 48-hour route
Day 1
Morning: Start in Gamla Stan before the crowds. Walk the narrow lanes up to Stortorget and browse the stalls while it’s quiet, then see the Royal Palace and the cathedral, Storkyrkan, next door.
Afternoon: Cross to Norrmalm for fika at Vete-Katten on Kungsgatan, a konditori since 1928, for a cinnamon or saffron bun and coffee. Then walk down Hamngatan to see the NK Christmas windows, which have a new theme each year.
Evening: Follow the #Stockholmsjul lights from Kungsträdgården through the city centre. Visit Stockholm points to a map of light walks at stockholmsjul.se. Finish with dinner back in Gamla Stan, where the market and the lanes glow after dark.
Day 2
Morning: Take tram 7 or the ferry from Slussen to Djurgården. Arrive at Skansen at opening time, 10am, for the Christmas market among the historic houses and farmsteads.
Afternoon: Warm up by a bonfire with a waffle and a cup of glögg, then walk along the Djurgården shore back towards the city. Continue to Östermalm for a late lunch at Östermalms Saluhall, the 1888 food hall on Östermalmstorg.
Evening: Spend the evening in Östermalm or Södermalm. Södermalm’s viewpoints over the water and Gamla Stan are at their best on a clear winter night.
Tip: It gets dark by mid-afternoon in December. Do Skansen in the morning, then save Gamla Stan and the lights for after dark.
