The Montreux Christmas market 2026 is the most scenic market in Switzerland. Its chalets line the shore of Lake Geneva, with the Alps rising across the water, Santa flies over the quays every evening and a cogwheel train climbs to his house in the snow. It suits couples and families, and it pairs naturally with the Château de Chillon and the Lavaux vineyards.
Why go
Montreux Noël, the town’s Christmas festival, reaches its 32nd edition in 2026. More than 170 illuminated chalets stretch along the lakeside promenade, up the Grand-Rue and into the old covered market, starting about 200 metres from the station. Most Christmas markets are on a square; this one is on a lake, and the light across the water at dusk is the reason to come.
The extras make it a weekend rather than an evening. Santa’s sleigh crosses the sky above the market each evening. Up in the mountains, Santa’s House at Rochers-de-Naye is reached by cogwheel train. Down the shore, Chillon Castle stands on its rock in the lake, and the vineyard terraces of Lavaux are a short train ride the other way.

The 48-hour route
Day 1
Morning: Arrive at Montreux station and walk down to the lake. Start at the western end of the market, where the stalls are quiet before lunch, and work your way along the quays past the Freddie Mercury statue.
Afternoon: Browse the covered market and the Grand-Rue, then walk east along the lakeside promenade towards Territet as the light starts to go. The promenade runs past palms and Belle Époque hotels, and the views across the lake to the mountains are at their best in late afternoon.
Evening: Be back on the quays by 5pm for Santa’s first flight. Stay for the next one with a vin chaud or a fondue in one of the market restaurants, which serve until 11pm.
Day 2
Morning: Take the cogwheel train from Montreux station up to Rochers-de-Naye for Santa’s House, on one of its open days. Allow about half a day for the round trip. If Santa isn’t receiving that day, go to Chillon instead.
Afternoon: Visit the Château de Chillon, about 3 km along the shore, by local bus or on foot along the promenade. From November to February it opens from 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4pm, and it’s closed on 25 December. Allow a couple of hours for the cellars, halls and towers.
Evening: Take the train a few stops west to Rivaz for Lavaux Vinorama, the wine centre of the Lavaux terraces, which opens until 8pm from Monday to Saturday and until 7pm on Sundays. Taste the local Chasselas, then head back to Montreux for a last walk through the lit market.
What to eat and drink
Dishes and drinks to try

- Raclette: Melted cheese scraped onto potatoes, with pickles and onions.
- Malakoff: A Vaud speciality of deep-fried cheese fritters, best eaten hot.
- Papet vaudois: Leeks and potatoes cooked with saucisson vaudois, a smoked pork sausage.
- Vin chaud: Mulled wine, the market’s warming drink.
- Chasselas: The crisp white wine of the Lavaux terraces, which also goes into many fondues.
Where to eat and drink
- Montreux Noël restaurants: The market’s own restaurants serve fondue and other hot dishes until 11pm.
- Lavaux Vinorama (Rivaz): The Lavaux wine centre, with more than 250 regional wines to taste and a film on a year in the life of a winegrowing family.

Getting around
The market, the station and the lakefront are all walkable, though the town climbs steeply from the shore, so expect stairs. The lakeside promenade runs all the way to Chillon. The cogwheel railway to Rochers-de-Naye starts at Montreux station, and regional trains run along the shore towards Vevey and Lavaux.
