Stuttgart’s Christmas market is one of the largest in Germany, with around 300 stalls stretching from the New Palace across Schillerplatz to the Marktplatz. What sets it apart is the roofs: traders decorate them with elaborate winter scenes, so you spend as much time looking up as at the stalls. Add a day in Esslingen’s medieval market and you have a weekend for couples and families who like their Christmas traditional.
Why go
The roof decorations are the draw, and they are best seen in daylight. After dark the market changes again, with concerts in the Renaissance courtyard of the Old Castle and the smell of Glühwein and anise biscuits in the lanes.
Stuttgart is also a good base. Esslingen, with its half-timbered old town and medieval-themed market, is a short S-Bahn ride away. Our Frankfurt Christmas market 2026 and Munich Christmas market 2026 guides cover two more cities on direct trains.

2026 dates: The organiser, Esslinger Stadtmarketing & Tourismus, confirms the market from 24 November to 22 December 2026. It opens daily from 11am to 8.30pm, and until 9.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
The 48-hour route
Day 1: Stuttgart
Morning: Start on Schlossplatz by the Neues Schloss. Walk into the market as it opens at 11am and take your time on Schillerplatz and the Marktplatz, where the roofs are easiest to see before the crowds arrive.
Afternoon: Look inside the Stiftskirche, then visit the Landesmuseum Württemberg in the Old Castle, or take the Stadtbahn to the Mercedes-Benz Museum if cars are your thing.
Evening: Come back to the Old Castle courtyard for the Christmas concert, then dinner at a traditional Weinstube.
Tip: Friday and Saturday evenings are the busiest. Weekday mornings are calmer and better light for the roofs.
Day 2: Esslingen
Morning: Take the S1 from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof to Esslingen (Neckar). Walk up through the old town to the Burg for views over the rooftops.
Afternoon: Spend the afternoon at the medieval market on the Marktplatz and Rathausplatz, with craftspeople at work and hot drinks from the stalls.
Evening: Head back to Stuttgart, or stay in Esslingen for the market after dark. On a clear evening, the Fernsehturm in Stuttgart gives the best view over the city lights.
What to eat and drink
- Springerle: Anise biscuits pressed with carved wooden moulds, sold at their own stand in the market.
- Hutzelbrot: A dark, sweet bread packed with dried pears and fruit.
- Glühwein and Punsch: Mulled wine and its alcohol-free cousin, with Lebkuchen on the side.
- Maultaschen: Swabian pasta parcels filled with meat and spinach, served in broth or fried with onions.
- Käsespätzle and Zwiebelrostbraten: Cheese noodles with fried onions, and roast beef under a heap of crisp onions.
- Where to try them: Stuttgart-Marketing recommends the Stuttgarter Stäffele, which has served Swabian dishes for more than 50 years, Carl’s Brauhaus on Schlossplatz, and Weinstuben such as Weinstube Schellenturm.
Where to stay
- Mitte, around Königstraße: Walk to every part of the market. Best for first-timers.
- Bohnenviertel: Old streets, small wine bars and shops just south of the Marktplatz. Best for couples.
- Near the Hauptbahnhof: Easy for the S1 to Esslingen and trains onwards. Best for a two-town trip.
- Esslingen old town: Quieter nights among the half-timbered houses. Best for a slower weekend.
Getting around
The market is in the pedestrian centre, so you will walk. The S-Bahn and the Stadtbahn reach the museums and the hills, and the S1 runs to Esslingen in about a quarter of an hour.
Getting there: Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof has direct trains from Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich, and Stuttgart Airport is on the S-Bahn.
