New Year’s Eve falls on a Thursday in 2026, so a long weekend from 31 December to Sunday 3 January is easy to build. The best cities for New Year’s Eve in Europe each do midnight in their own way: ticketed riverbanks, street parties under a castle, grapes eaten to a clock, or a whole city lighting its own rockets. Some have published their 2026 plans and others haven’t yet, so we say which is which.
The best cities for New Year’s Eve in Europe
1. London, United Kingdom

The Mayor of London’s fireworks light up the Thames around the London Eye at midnight, and the 2026 event is confirmed for the night of 31 December. The riverside viewing areas are ticket-only, for everyone of any age, and tickets are sold only through Ticketmaster, up to four per order. Six colour-coded areas run along Victoria Embankment, behind the London Eye, on Westminster and Waterloo bridges and on Albert Embankment, where there is an accessible area. Each has its own gate, open from 8pm to 10.30pm, and you can’t move between areas on the night. The first batch of tickets is on sale and a second release is promised. Resale works only through Ticketmaster’s Fan-to-Fan platform at face value.
Best for: A big, organised show with a head-on view of the river.
Tip: The organisers advise against bringing young children, and under-16s must be with an adult. The lead booker may be asked for photo ID matching the tickets.
2. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay 2026 runs from 29 December to 1 January 2027, so it’s a festival, not just a night. On 31 December the Street Party fills Princes Street from 8pm with live music, DJs, big screens, pipers and street food, and at midnight the fireworks burst over the city with Edinburgh Castle as the backdrop. The Street Party is ticketed, with an age restriction of 12 and over. Official tickets come only from edinburghshogmanay.com, Ticketmaster and Tickets Scotland, and there’s no official resale. Our Edinburgh Christmas market guide covers the Torchlight Procession and the rest of the week.
Best for: A multi-day party with real Scottish tradition.
3. Paris, France

Paris celebrates on the Champs-Élysées, with the Arc de Triomphe as a giant screen. The tourist board’s listing for 31 December 2026 opens the avenue to the public from 7pm. A video-mapping show starts on the Arc at 11.50pm, followed by the countdown and about ten minutes of fireworks set to music, ending around 12.20am. Entry is free, but alcohol, glass, animals, bicycles and scooters are banned, and pushchairs are strongly discouraged. Arrive early, because everyone passes through security checks. Several metro stations near the avenue close during the evening, so check RATP before you set off.
Best for: A free, classic city-centre spectacle.
4. Berlin, Germany

Berlin’s party at the Brandenburg Gate is the city’s best-known New Year’s Eve, but the 2026 plan is not out yet: the official listing says it isn’t known whether the event will take place this year. Last year’s edition changed format, with a DJ party from 10pm and a seven-and-a-half-minute fireworks display at midnight, and free tickets for about 20,000 guests released in December. Our Berlin guide has the rest of the weekend.
Best for: A loud, informal night in a city that doesn’t go to bed early.
5. Vienna, Austria

Vienna turns its old town into a New Year’s Eve Trail, the Silvesterpfad, on 31 December 2026 from 2pm to 2am, with food and drink stands from 11am. The route runs from Freyung past Am Hof, Graben, Stephansplatz and Kärntner Straße to Neuer Markt, with more stages at Rathausplatz and in the Prater. Entry is free. At midnight the city dances to the Blue Danube waltz as the Pummerin, St Stephen’s Cathedral’s great bell, rings in the new year. Rockets and firecrackers in category F2 are banned throughout Vienna. On 1 January 2027 the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert is shown live on screens at Stephansplatz and in the Prater from 11.15am. See our Vienna weekend guide.
Best for: Elegance, waltzes and a gentle New Year’s Day.
6. Madrid, Spain

At midnight Spain eats twelve grapes, one for each chime of the clock on the Real Casa de Correos in the Puerta del Sol. The city hasn’t published its 2026 arrangements yet, but last year the square was cleared from 9pm and reopened from 10pm through four controlled entrances, on Calle Mayor, Calle Arenal, Calle Alcalá and Carrera de San Jerónimo, until it reached its 15,000 capacity. Police ran checks at every entrance. The night before, on 30 December, the square also hosts the "preúvas", a rehearsal of the ritual.
Best for: A uniquely Spanish midnight ritual.
7. Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s party takes over Praça do Comércio, the great riverside square. The 2026 line-up hasn’t been announced. Last year’s free party had concerts from 9.30pm, ten minutes of fireworks over the Tagus at midnight with 250 drones overhead, and music until 1am. It was recommended for ages six and up, with dedicated access for people with reduced mobility. Pair it with our Lisbon weekend guide.
Best for: A free party by the river in mild winter weather.
8. Funchal, Madeira, Portugal

Madeira’s Christmas and New Year festivities run from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. At midnight on 31 December, fireworks are fired from the hillside amphitheatre around Funchal, the seafront and boats in the bay, so the whole town becomes the stage. In 2006/07 Guinness World Records named it the largest fireworks display in the world. Watch from the seafront or from a terrace above the bay. Our Madeira in winter guide has the full route.
Best for: Winter sun and fireworks all around you.
9. Valletta, Malta
Malta’s national New Year’s Eve celebration fills St George’s Square in Valletta from 10pm to 2am on 31 December 2026. A concert builds to midnight, followed by fireworks over the Grand Harbour. It’s compact and easy to reach on foot from anywhere in the walled city.
Best for: A small-scale, sunny New Year with a harbour view.
10. Reykjavík, Iceland

Reykjavík has no official fireworks display. Instead, the residents light their own. The evening starts with family dinners and neighbourhood bonfires. From around 10.30pm the streets go quiet while most of the country watches Áramótaskaup, a satirical comedy show. As soon as it ends, at about 11.30pm, the sky fills with rockets from every garden and street, well before midnight. In past years the city named Skólavörðuholt, the hill around Hallgrímskirkja, as the downtown fireworks area. Wear safety glasses and gloves if you join in. Fireworks are banned at the bonfires themselves, though sparklers are allowed.
Best for: The most chaotic and memorable midnight in Europe.
How to choose
- For a confirmed big show: London, Paris, Edinburgh, Vienna and Valletta have published their 2026 plans. In London and Edinburgh, a ticket decides if you get in.
- For a free night: Paris and Vienna list free entry for 2026, and Lisbon’s party was free last year. Paris has security checks, and Madrid has capped numbers in the Puerta del Sol.
- For winter sun: Look south to Funchal, Valletta or Lisbon.
- For tradition: Madrid’s grapes, Vienna’s waltz and Reykjavík’s bonfires give the night a local character.
- For a longer trip: Edinburgh’s Hogmanay starts on 29 December, and Vienna’s New Year’s Concert follows on 1 January. Some Christmas markets also stay open; see Christmas markets open in January 2027.
