Ljubljana’s Christmas market follows the river. Wooden stalls line the banks of the Ljubljanica and spill into the squares of a small, car-free old town, the lights come on over the bridges, and free concerts play on the squares most evenings. It suits couples and friends who want a relaxed, walkable capital, and the season runs well past New Year.

Why go

The city calls the season Festive December, and the market is only part of it. Stalls stretch from the Breg embankment and Cankarjevo nabrežje across Prešeren Square to Kongresni trg, Stritarjeva ulica and Pogačarjev trg, with a festive fair up at the castle. The national tourist board describes the lights as one of the most imaginative displays in this part of Europe.

It is also easy. The old town is small and mostly pedestrian, the castle is a funicular ride away, and entry to the market and the outdoor events is free. Food leans Slovenian: sausages, žganci, jota stew and seafood alongside mulled wine and hot tea.

The 48-hour route

Day 1

Morning: Walk from the station to Prešeren Square and cross the Triple Bridge into the old town. Follow Stritarjeva ulica to the cathedral and Pogačarjev trg, and look round Plečnik’s riverside market hall.

Afternoon: Take the funicular from Krekov trg up to Ljubljana Castle for the festive fair, the nativity scene in the chapel and the view over the roofs. Walk back down through the woods as the light fades.

Evening: Join the riverbank stalls on Cankarjevo nabrežje and Breg as the lights come on, then end on Prešeren Square under the tree.

Tip: The riverbank stalls are narrow and get crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. Go on a weekday evening, or early in the evening before dinner.

Day 2

Morning: Walk east along the river to the Dragon Bridge, then back through the old town’s Mestni trg and Gornji trg, where the old houses climb towards the castle hill.

Afternoon: Head to Kongresni trg and Zvezda Park. Between 3 and 23 December the Magical Forest opens there at 5pm for families.

Evening: Catch a free concert on one of the squares, then eat at the stalls on Pogačarjev trg.

What to eat and drink

  • Kuhano vino: Slovenian mulled wine, on every stretch of the market, with hot tea for a non-alcoholic alternative.
  • Sausages: Grilled at the stalls, often the Carniolan sausage that Slovenia is proud of.
  • Jota: A hearty stew of sauerkraut, beans and potatoes, served at the spoon-dish stalls.
  • Žganci: Buckwheat or maize spoonbread, a traditional Slovenian staple.
  • Potica: The rolled nut cake of Slovenian Christmas, sliced to reveal a spiral of filling.

Where to stay

  • Old town (Stari trg and Mestni trg): Below the castle, with the market at your door. Best for first-timers and couples.
  • Around Prešeren Square and Čopova ulica: The most central option, between the station and the river. Best for short trips.
  • Trnovo: South along the river, quieter and residential. Best for a slower pace.
  • Near the station: Practical for rail arrivals, about 15 minutes’ walk from the centre.

Getting around

The old town and riverbanks are compact and largely pedestrian, so you walk almost everywhere. The funicular from Krekov trg climbs to Ljubljana Castle in a few minutes. The railway station is about 15 minutes on foot from Prešeren Square, and Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport is at Brnik, north of the city.
