Heidelberg doesn’t squeeze its Christmas market into one square. Stalls are spread across the Old Town, from Bismarckplatz along the Hauptstraße to the Kornmarkt below the castle, so the market becomes a walk. It suits couples and families, and the castle ruin lit above the rooftops makes it one of the most romantic markets in Germany.

Why go

The setting does most of the work. Heidelberg’s Old Town sits between the Neckar and a wooded hillside, with a red sandstone castle ruin above it. The market’s squares line up along one long pedestrian street, so you move from one small market to the next rather than queuing in a single crowd.

Heidelberg Marketing describes stalls as tiny fairy-tale cottages, with the smell of roasted almonds drifting through the lanes. Each square has its own character, from heated huts at Bismarckplatz to a winter forest on the Kornmarkt. The ice rink keeps going into January, after the stalls have gone.
