Zurich does Christmas with a light touch: half a dozen small markets within walking distance, a canopy of crystals over its grandest street and fondue chalets by the lake. Nothing here is huge, which is the appeal. It suits couples, families and anyone who likes good food, short walks and a market or two between museums and cafés.
Why go
Zurich’s markets are compact and well run, and each has its own character. Bellevue Noël brings the big set piece by the lake, the Old Town lanes of the Niederdorf feel the most traditional, and the Singing Christmas Tree adds daily carols. When it rains, the market in the main station hall keeps you dry.
The city around them is easy to love in winter. The Limmat runs between two old towns, the lake opens up at the end of every street, and Lucy, the Christmas lights on Bahnhofstrasse, turns a shopping street into one of Europe’s best evening walks.

The 48-hour route
Day 1
Morning: Start on the right bank in the Niederdorf. Walk the Old Town lanes before the stalls get busy, then climb to the Grossmünster, whose twin towers you’ll have seen from every bridge.
Afternoon: Follow the Limmat down to Bellevue and Sechseläutenplatz. Browse Bellevue Noël, walk the Advent wreath and look out over the lake from the square’s edge by the Opera House.
Evening: Stay for fondue in the chalet at Bellevue Noël, booked ahead, or eat from the stalls. Then walk along the lake to the bottom of Bahnhofstrasse.
Tip: Bellevue Noël is busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings. Come on a weekday afternoon for the stalls and the wreath, and save the weekend for a late walk under Lucy.
Day 2
Morning: Cross to the left bank and the Münsterhof, then look into the Fraumünster next to it. Walk up the lanes to the Lindenhof for the view back over the Limmat to the Grossmünster.
Afternoon: Head to Werdmühleplatz for the Singing Christmas Tree and its small organic market. Then continue to the main station for Polarzauber and the Europaallee market next door, good options if the weather turns.
Evening: Walk Bahnhofstrasse under Lucy from the station back towards the lake, ideally after dark when the crystals are at their best.
What to eat and drink
- Cheese fondue: Zurich’s signature winter meal, served at Bellevue Noël’s chalet and at fondue stands around the city.
- Raclette: Melted cheese scraped over potatoes or bread, a standard at the market stalls.
- Glühwein: Mulled wine, at every market.
- Gebrannte Mandeln: Warm almonds roasted in sugar and cinnamon.
- Marroni: Roast chestnuts in paper bags, sold from stands on the streets in winter.
- Zürcher Tirggel: Thin, hard honey biscuits pressed with pictures, Zurich’s own Christmas biscuit and an easy gift to pack.
Where to stay
- Altstadt (Old Town): The Niederdorf, Münsterhof and Grossmünster on your doorstep. Best for first-timers.
- Around Zurich HB: Easy arrivals by train and from the airport, with Polarzauber, Europaallee and Bahnhofstrasse close by. Best for rail travellers.
- Seefeld: Calmer streets by the lake, a short walk from Bellevue. Best for couples.
- Zurich West: Converted industrial buildings, bars and restaurants. Best for nightlife and return visitors.
Getting around
The markets are all within about 20 minutes’ walk of each other, from the main station down Bahnhofstrasse to the lake and across the river to the Old Town. Trams fill the gaps when it’s cold or wet.
Getting there: Trains from Zurich Airport reach Zurich HB in about 10 to 15 minutes. Zurich HB has direct trains from across Switzerland and from Germany, Austria, France and Italy, so you can link Zurich with our Munich Christmas market guide or a trip to Colmar.
