Getting there and around
York station sits just outside the city walls, on the East Coast main line with direct trains from London, Edinburgh and Newcastle and frequent services from Leeds and Manchester. From the station, walk across Lendal Bridge and through the old streets to Parliament Street in around 15 minutes.
Once you’re inside the walls, walk everywhere. The historic centre is small, and many of its streets are pedestrianised during the day. The narrow lanes around the Shambles can be slow going with a pushchair on busy days, so keep to the wider streets at peak times.
Drivers are better off with Park & Ride from the edge of the city. Central car parks are few, and they fill early on market weekends.
