Rail works around Switzerland in November 2026: Munich, Paris, Milan and Vienna trains

Buses replace Zurich–Munich EuroCity trains on several November dates, Basel–Paris TGVs stop for a weekend and the Arlberg line closes. The dates, from SBB.

Planning a weekend by train from Switzerland in November? Several international routes are hit by engineering works over the next few weeks. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) lists the changes on its page for timetable changes in Europe. Here are the dates that matter for a weekend trip.

Switzerland rail works November 2026: the dates

Zurich–Munich (EuroCity). Works between Lindau and Munich run in several blocks. All EuroCity trains between Lindau-Reutin and Munich are cancelled from 31 October to 5 November, from 13 to 16 November and from 25 to 29 November. Replacement buses run to Munich ZOB at Hackerbrücke for most of the cancelled trains. Individual trains are also cancelled on 6, 12 and 17 November and on 24 and 30 November and 3 December. Until 12 December, EuroCity journeys between Zurich and Munich take about 10 minutes longer.

Basel–Paris (TGV). All TGV services between Basel and Paris are cancelled on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November. The same weekend, from Saturday 01:00 to Monday 04:30, there are no trains between Basel and Saint-Louis on the French side of the border.

Milan by EuroCity. On the weekends of 13–16 and 20–23 November, from Friday evening to Monday morning, EuroCity trains between Chiasso and Milan do not stop at Como San Giovanni. Ticino’s TILO regional trains on the same line are also affected. If you’re heading for Lake Como, check the regional timetable before you go.

Zurich–Vienna and the Arlberg. Until 12 December, journeys between Zurich and Salzburg take up to an hour longer. From 18 to 23 November the Arlberg line between Buchs SG and Ötztal is closed: Railjets to Vienna and the EuroCity to Graz don’t run between Zurich and Ötztal, buses replace them between Sargans and Ötztal, and night trains are diverted with longer journey times.

What it means for a weekend trip

The Munich closures cover the weekends of 31 October–1 November, 14–15 November and 28–29 November. The Munich Christmas market on Marienplatz opens on 20 November, so a market trip on 28–29 November means a bus for part of the way. Allow extra time, or pick the weekend of 21–22 November or a December weekend.

For Paris, avoid 14–15 November if you’re travelling from Basel, or look at the TGV from Geneva instead, which is not on SBB’s list for that weekend.

SBB updates the list as works change, so check the SBB page and your train’s timetable a few days before you travel.

Facts last checked in October 2026. Opening times and dates change, so confirm on the official site before you travel.
