Hamburg does Christmas with water all around it. The big market sits in front of the town hall, where Santa flies overhead on a sleigh, and within a short walk you have white tents on the Alster, a canal-side market on the Fleetinsel and the red-brick Speicherstadt lit up after dark. It suits couples and families who want variety in two days, and anyone curious to see how St. Pauli does Advent.
Why go
The city runs dozens of markets, and the best of them sit close together. The Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt, run by the Roncalli circus family, is the classic: wooden stalls, a toy alley, a historic carousel and a sleigh that flies across the square three times a day. Five minutes away, the Jungfernstieg market swaps huts for white pagoda tents on the edge of the Binnenalster.
Then there is the other Hamburg. On Spielbudenplatz, just off the Reeperbahn, Santa Pauli calls itself the city’s naughtiest market, with live music, late hours and an adults-only show stage. Few cities put such different markets a short U-Bahn ride apart.

The 48-hour route
Day 1
Morning: Arrive at the Hauptbahnhof and walk down Mönckebergstraße, the main shopping street, to the Rathausmarkt. See the town hall from the inside courtyard, then browse the toy alley and the craft stalls while the market is quiet.
Afternoon: Walk round the corner to the Jungfernstieg for the white tents and a ride on the old Ferris wheel over the Binnenalster. Follow the water round the Ballindamm, then come back to the Rathausmarkt for Santa’s 4pm or 6pm flight.
Evening: Stay as the lights come on. The Alster tree glows on the lake, and the town hall façade is lit behind the stalls.
Tip: Weekend evenings on the Rathausmarkt get very full. Browse on a weekday before 3pm, then return for one of Santa’s flights.
Day 2
Morning: Walk south to the Fleetinsel market among the canals, then on to the Speicherstadt. Cross the little bridges between the warehouses and head into HafenCity to see the Elbphilharmonie from the waterfront.
Afternoon: Take the U-Bahn or S-Bahn to St. Pauli. Walk down to the Landungsbrücken piers for the view over the Elbe and the port cranes.
Evening: Finish at Santa Pauli on Spielbudenplatz, which opens at 4pm and gets livelier as the night goes on. Mix your own mulled wine at the Glühwein pharmacy.
What to eat and drink
- Rathausmarkt Glühwein: An organic mulled wine made for the market by a winemaker from the Palatinate.
- Franzbrötchen: Hamburg’s flattened cinnamon pastry, sold in bakeries all over the city. The best breakfast before a market morning.
- Fischbrötchen: A bread roll with pickled herring or smoked fish, the classic Hamburg snack, found on the markets and at the harbour.
- Feuerzangenbowle: Mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar cone set alight over the top.
- Roasted almonds and Bratwurst: The standard German market fare, on every square.
Where to stay
- Altstadt and Neustadt: The Rathausmarkt, Jungfernstieg and Fleetinsel on your doorstep. Best for first-timers.
- St. Georg: Next to the Hauptbahnhof and the Alster, with plenty of cafés. Best for rail travellers.
- HafenCity: Modern hotels by the water near the Speicherstadt. Best for couples.
- St. Pauli: Closest to the Reeperbahn and Santa Pauli. Best for nightlife.
