If Café Central is on your list for an autumn weekend in Vienna, you’ll need a plan B. The famous coffee house in Palais Ferstel closed on 16 March 2026 for a full renovation. It is still closed.
What’s happening
When it closed, the café said it would reopen in autumn 2026. Its official website now says reopening is planned for "winter 2026" and gives no exact date. The building is listed, so the renovation has to follow heritage rules, and the café has called it a comprehensive general renovation. It comes in the café’s 150th year.
In the meantime, the team runs a pop-up called Café Decentral in Palais Harrach, at Freyung 3, a few minutes’ walk away. The official site lists it as open daily from 7.30am to 10pm. It serves pastries from Café Central’s kitchen, classic Viennese coffees and aperitivo drinks, with a terrace on the Freyung.
What it means for your weekend
Don’t plan an itinerary around Café Central before Christmas. Even if it reopens in winter, the first weeks are likely to bring long queues. If you visit for the Christmas markets (the Schönbrunn market opens on 6 November and the Rathausplatz market on 13 November), expect the café to be either still closed or very busy.
Vienna has plenty of other grand coffee houses. Café Landtmann on the Ringstrasse, next to the Burgtheater, has the same marble-and-chandelier feel and a long history. Café Sperl in the 6th district is quieter and more lived-in, with billiard tables and old booths.
What to do
- Swap Café Central for Café Landtmann or Café Sperl, or try Decentral for the Central’s own pastries.
- Check cafecentral.wien before you travel for a confirmed reopening date.
- Go early or mid-afternoon on weekdays to get a table at the classic coffee houses without a wait.
