The best Christmas markets in England and Scotland
The list below runs in order of opening across the season. Some sites stay open longer than the main market, so read each entry for the details.
1. Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market, England
5 November – 24 December 2026. Birmingham’s market is the UK’s best-known German-style market, born from the city’s twinning with Frankfurt. Chalets fill Victoria Square and New Street, selling bratwurst, pretzels, schnitzel and glühwein alongside handmade decorations. For 2026, one stretch of New Street will have no stalls because of nearby building work, and the Big Wheel and ice rink in Centenary Square run until 3 January 2027.
Best for: German food and drink, and a long, easy-to-reach market by train.

2. Manchester Christmas Markets, England
6 November – 22 December 2026, with Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens open to 3 January 2027. Manchester spreads its stalls across several city-centre sites, so you walk from one cluster to the next. Albert Square, in front of the restored Town Hall, is back as the centrepiece after years of works, with Cathedral Gardens as the second anchor. The Skate Manchester ice rink runs over the same period as the extended sites.
Best for: Groups and food lovers who want a market crawl, with good dining and nightlife after dark.

3. York Christmas Market, England
12 November – 21 December 2026, closed Tuesdays. Alpine chalets line Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, a few minutes from the Shambles and York Minster. The market is compact, but the medieval city around it makes the trip. It opens 10.30am–7pm from Wednesday to Monday, and closes at 5pm on its final day.
Best for: A walkable historic city break, especially with children or as a couple.

4. Edinburgh’s Christmas, Scotland
14 November 2026 – 3 January 2027. About 70 market stalls fill East Princes Street Gardens, below the castle, and the market is free to enter. The LNER Big Wheel and the 80m Starflyer give sweeping views over the Old Town, while West Princes Street Gardens hosts a family funfair and George Street has an undercover ice rink from 21 November. Christmas runs straight into Hogmanay, so a late-December trip gets both.
Best for: Big views, rides and a full city break that can stretch into New Year.

5. Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market, England
20 November – 22 December 2026. Around 128 chalets set up within the grounds of Winchester Cathedral, including a makers’ market and a food court. The setting is calm and green, with the cathedral’s great nave as the backdrop, and the scale feels manageable rather than overwhelming. It opens 10am–6pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 8pm on Friday and Saturday.
Best for: A smaller, more traditional market with a striking cathedral setting, within easy reach of London.
6. Bath Christmas Market, England
26 November – 13 December 2026. More than 180 chalets spread through Bath’s Georgian centre, around the Abbey, Bath Street, Union Street and the Abbey Quarter. Bath leans local: around two-thirds of the traders at the 2025 market came from Bath and the surrounding area, so it’s strong on crafts, gifts and West Country food. It’s a short run of under three weeks, so the weekends get busy.
Best for: Gift shopping from local makers, paired with the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent.

7. London: Southbank Centre Winter Market and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, England
Southbank Centre Winter Market: 2 November 2026 – 4 January 2027. Hyde Park Winter Wonderland: 19 November 2026 – 3 January 2027. The Southbank market lines the Queen’s Walk along the Thames, between the Royal Festival Hall and Jubilee Gardens, and is open daily except 25 and 31 December. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is a much bigger affair, with rides, shows and food stalls. Entry works by time slot, and popular dates sell out, so book online in advance.
Best for: A Christmas market as part of a wider London weekend, with riverside walks or full-scale festive entertainment.

Tip: Plan around the closing dates. Bath ends on 13 December and York on 21 December, while Edinburgh, London and parts of Manchester run into January.
How to choose
Start with what you want from the weekend, then match the dates.
- For German-style food and drink, go to Birmingham. It feels closest to a market in Germany.
- For a market crawl with nightlife, choose Manchester. The spread of sites keeps you moving.
- For history and charm, pick York or Bath. Both are compact, walkable and photogenic.
- For views and rides, Edinburgh is hard to beat, especially after dark.
- For a calmer, traditional feel, try Winchester’s cathedral grounds.
- For a mix of market and big-city weekend, London’s riverside and Hyde Park options work well.
- For a late trip, after 21 December, stick with Edinburgh, London, or Manchester’s Albert Square and Cathedral Gardens, which stay open into the New Year.
Weekdays in November are the quietest time at almost every market on this list. Saturdays in December are the busiest. If you can only travel at the weekend, arrive at opening time and eat early.
Tip: Go by train where you can. Every market here is a short walk from a main station, and city-centre parking fills fast in December.
